Hideous flesh blob aliens in sewers of NY

Aliens have broken out all over the New York sewer system and are just waiting to adapt to our environment before attacking us via out water supply!!!

OK – so that’s not true but watch the video and let your mind wander before you head out in to the internet and find there is a perfectly normal explanation for it – or you could just full screen the video and freak your friends out with it.

Happy Birthday Coops!

Today is Coops birthday and we wanted to share some of the competition entries we received last week.
Some were appalling and you really should have listened a bit harder at school, others of a lewd and graphic nature – which was nice – and others were simply stunning. The winning entry was just incredible (we didn’t quite believe it at first until we were provided with a PSD file).

Thanks to everyone who sent in – there were some clever and skillful entires that I know you worked hard at and even some that just tried hard but were sadly quite rubbish. Here’s our faves.

The Winner:

Ant mega-colony takes over world

A single mega-colony of ants has colonised much of the world, scientists have discovered.Argentine ants living in vast numbers across Europe, the US and Japan belong to the same inter-related colony, and will refuse to fight one another.

The colony may be the largest of its type ever known for any insect species, and could rival humans in the scale of its world domination. What’s more, people are unwittingly helping the mega-colony stick together.

Argentine ants (Linepithema humile) were once native to South America. But people have unintentionally introduced the ants to all continents except Antarctica. These introduced Argentine ants are renowned for forming large colonies, and for becoming a significant pest, attacking native animals and crops.

What Rhubarb: World’s first ever ’self-watering’ plant discovered in Israe

Scientists have discovered the world’s first ’self-watering’ plant in Israel’s Negev desert (Adopt Derren “Stewie” voice: ooh! as if anyone ELSE would discover that!)– one of the driest regions on earth. The Desert Rhubarb can hold 16 times more water than its rivals and has developed a unique ability to effectively water itself in its barren habitat.

Researchers were confounded by the metre-wide plant’s giant leaves, compared to its desert counterparts, whose tiny leaves stop dangerous moisture loss. But they found the plant’s large leaves are the key to its success, because they are covered in microscopic streams through which water can be channelled.

Scientists claim ridges in the leaves act like mountain valleys, funnelling the water slowly and directly into the plant while stopping it evaporating.A team from the Department of Science Education-Biology at the University of Haifa-Oranim, in Israel, said the leaves act like a mini irrigation system. Lead researcher Professor Gidi Ne’eman said “We know of no other plant in the deserts of the world that functions in this manner.

Midgets, Wrestlers, Drugs, Robbers and Mexico

This is a sad tale and probably doesn’t belong on here – but it just sounds like a Tarantino movie:

Post mortems are being performed on the two wrestlers, one of whom went by the name “La Parkita” – or “Little Death” – and wore a skeleton costume in the ring. The other was known as “Espectrito Jr.” Authorities say two women were seen leaving the men’s hotel room in Mexico City before the bodies were discovered.

Prosecutor Miguel Angel Mancera said that gangs of female robbers in the area are experienced at using drugs to knock men out and rob them, but they may have used too strong a dose. They said the wrestlers may have succumbed to the drugs more readily because of their small stature, although larger men have also died in similar crimes.

Previously, Mexican police have arrested prostitutes who poisoned “clients” to steal their money. In 2008, 20 members of a gang were arrested for similar crimes.

Vicar in ’sham marriages’ arrest

A serving vicar has been arrested in an inquiry into nearly 180 “sham marriages” at an East Sussex church.

Police joined a team from the UK Border Agency to arrest four people, including the Reverend Alex Brown (no relation), 61, from St Peter and St. Paul Church, St Leonards. Det Insp Andy Cummins said Tuesday’s arrests followed an 18-month probe into allegations that nearly 180 sham marriages had been arranged.

A Chichester diocese spokesman said the vicar had been suspended from duty. DI Cummins said the bogus marriages “allowed non-EU nationals to remain within the UK and EU member states”. More than 35 officers carried out dawn raids at six addresses in St Leonards and Hastings.

Mr Brown, 61, was arrested on suspicion of conspiring to facilitate the illegal entry of people to the UK. A 32-year-old Ukrainian man and a 27-year-old Latvian woman, believed to have been one of the brides, were both arrested on suspicion of facilitation offences at an address in Anglesea Terrace, Hastings.
A 36-year-old Armenian man was arrested at a property in Linton Road, Hastings, for the same alleged offence.

Should Britain ban the Burka?

As loathed as I am to put Nicky Campbell’s junk food format of debate on here I know it will be of interest to some to hear about this issue. There’s some irrelevant points, shouting-down and few people are allowed to develop an argument but there are interesting highlights and at no point does anyone wheel on a dangerously overweight mother-of-nine on incapacity benefit.

See colour when there is none

Stare at the centre of this movie. After 30 seconds your mind will imprint the colour on the image despite  it switching to black and white. Works better in full screen and if you keep your eyes still.

Doctors want to bring the church in to the NHS

Doctors are demanding that NHS staff be given a right to discuss spiritual issues with patients as well as being allowed to offer to pray for them.
Medics will tell the British Medical Association conference this week that staff should not be disciplined as long as they handle the issue sensitively.

The doctors said recent cases where health workers had got into trouble were making people fearful. But atheists said it was wrong to mix religion and health care. The doctors, who are behind the motion being discussed at the Liverpool conference, are unhappy about the guidance that has been issued.

The General Medical Council code suggests that discussing religion can be part of care provided to patients – as long as the individual’s wishes are respected. But at the start of this year the Department of Health issued guidance warning about proselytising. It said that discussing religion could be interpreted as an attempt to convert which could be construed as a form of harassment.

It comes as NHS trusts have taken a hard-line in a number of recent cases. Last year community nurse Caroline Petrie was suspended by North Somerset NHS Trust after offering to pray for a patient, although the 45-year-old was later allowed to return to work. And only last week a Gloucestershire nurse said she had left her job at a local hospital after being told she could not wear a crucifix – although the hospital said it was because of health and safety rules, not religion.
